18-year-old, Aysia and her son Timothy of Texas, began their journey with a mild case of Myelomeningocele Spina Bifida together just 9 months ago, the 18-year-old mother remembers her pregnancy with Timothy being fun up until the very end. Timothy was a strong kicker during her pregnancy. During Aysia’s pregnancy she developed the condition Preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a condition that pregnant women can have causing them to have high blood pressure, swollen legs, hands and feet. Preeclampsia forced Aysia to go on bed rest. Aysia had no idea that her unborn son had Spina Bifida. At 39 weeks, doctors induced Aysia. After 14 hours of being in labor, Timothy became distressed. The doctors did the safest thing for Aysia and Timothy, an emergency C-section. Timothy was born at 7 lbs. and 13 oz. at 2:09 pm. At first the doctors didn't think Timothy had Spina Bifida. They thought he had an extra bone, a floating bone to explain the bump in his back. After seeing a specialist, they diagnosed Timothy with a mild form of Myelomeningocele Spina Bifida. It was one of the mildest cases the doctors had ever seen. Timothy can move his legs and has some bowel issues. Aysia Marrero would like for mothers to know that no matter what the doctors say to you and no matter how scared you may be, do not give up on your child with special needs. Your child may have limitations, but you will love that child like any other child you have or may have.
